To get 2013 off to a good start, today I went to the movies and saw Les Miserables again! And apparently, everyone in town had the same idea, because the theater was almost as packed as when Sara and I saw it on Christmas! Ugh! Still, I enjoyed it... and I haven't stopped singing the songs yet! I never really loved “Stars” before, but the movie sold me on it, and on its new original song “Suddenly.” The movie puts in so many little details that the stage can't; I noticed on the second viewing that when Valjean lets Javert go, Javert has the same head wound that Valjean did when the Bishop let him go. Aunt Connie couldn't come with me, so I saw it with Eva instead. She's not a hard-core fan of the music like me and her mom, but she seemed to enjoy it. And she totally cried when Valjean died.

Aside from that, today was kinda stressful. I got my asthma medicine refilled (it hasn't bothered me much yet this winter, but only because I've been taking my preventative medication religiously), renewed Muse Watson's lisence plates (which expired at the end of 2012), and my phone is giving me very frustrating problems.

Below the cut is my annual list of the most-played songs on my iPod. Songs released in 2011 or later qualify as recent, but I didn't listen to much new music this year because I was too busy listening to Les Miserables. No one should be surprised by this. Last year's list is here.

For absolutely no reason, I've decided to learn what each state has on its state quarter (which is proving to be fairly easy) and to sing "99 Luft Balloons" in German (which is quite difficult). Don't ask me why I decide to do these things!

I'm finally getting around to posting the list I made of the most-played songs on my iPod for 2011. The one I made for 2010 is back here. It's interesting that the only one song that appears on both years' list is "Sugar, We're Going Down," by Fall-Out Boy. I didn't realize I liked it that much. It's also interesting (or kinda scary?) that in 2010, my most-played song only had a playcount of 69. This year... well, I've definitely gone past that.

I think the iPod lists have more vivid memories attached to them than any others. And here's one more list for 2011 - child actress movies I saw that year. I sorta dropped the ball on that one, but about halfway through the year, I made the goal to watch one child actress movie a month.

Movie list under here! )

On Sara's art calendar, I'm currently looking at The Titan's Goblet, an 1833 oil painting by Thomas Cole. It's a very cool and dramatic surrealist landscape.

LiveJournal made some changes to its Rich Text Editor this week, and I'm having a lot of trouble getting used to it. Even coding my entries by hand in HTML is difficult, and I'm a pro at HTML. As an experiment to see if I still know how to make cuts, I'm posting two lists of songs. Here's the most random assortment of music you've ever seen!

Although we've had our new laptop for a while now, I didn't resync my iPod until yesterday. I also still haven't set the sixth radio button in Muse Watson, because I can't decide what station to set it to. Maybe I have commitment issues.

Rebecca is still on her first iPod! That's right, it's the same one I got in 2007 and listened to in France. I think this is a record in my family. Anyway, since I resynced it, I thought it was time for an iPod meme! I haven't done one of these in a while. My last ones were here in 2009 and here in 2007. I like looking back at them and seeing how my taste in music has changed stayed the same.

As with the other two, these lyrics are arranged to tell a story. Sort of. )

THREE ... MORE ... DAYS until Passover!
rebecca_in_blue: (subtle sigh)

Yesterday started out as an amazing day. I went to my first Torah study at the temple, which was very enjoyable and educational. I have met some amazing people at the temple, and I'm touched by how far they've gone to make me feel welcome there. Afterwards, I burned a CD for Mom that she'd wanted, then I went for a long, wonderful bike ride (and collected cans; I need the money). It was warm and sunny out, perfect bike riding weather. But yesterday night at work was not pleasant, so the day started out awesome and ended badly. I'm still looking for a new job. A cold front arrived over night, and all day today has been freezing cold, windy and rainy. Looking out the window this afternoon, I honestly could not believe that I went bike riding just yesterday in short sleeves and sunglasses. The hell!

My favorite song of the moment is Firework, by Katy Perry. If you haven't heard it already, go to YouTube and listen to it. Its lyrics are an inspiring, powerful message about accepting and believing in yourself. It's also the first song I added to my iPod in 2011. Speaking of which:

About halfway through 2010, I started keeping a list of songs I had added to my iPod that year. Shortly after midnight on New Year's Eve, I went through the list recorded the playcount for each song. I know I have no life, but it was a fun thing to do. So, here's the musical recount for 2010. The second list is old songs I added to my iPod, and the first list is new music. I was rather impressed with how many songs there were for that list, because I usually don't listen to new music. Rebecca is not a hip person. But no doubt you already knew that, didn't you?

Sara says that one day she's going to call my store and ask for a shredder that can shred human remains. She never has, but on Tuesday, we got a customer that was almost as good. A normal-looking middle-aged man asked about voice recorders, and when Tim showed him what we carry, he asked if any of them could be hidden inside a bag to secretly record a conversation. When Tim said that would probably muffle the sound, he asked if we had one small enough to him to tape to his chest under his shirt. Tim got freaked-out and said that was probably illegal. I almost collapsed from laughing so hard.

I was off yesterday and had three very simple goals: go grocery shopping, do my laundry, and visit Grandma. But I accomplished only the first one. So when I got off work today, I made three more goals: go bike riding, do my laundry, and visit Grandma. But I accomplished only the second one. (The weather was so nice, and I took Sable on a long walk -- about a half-hour -- and fell asleep very suddenly after we got home.) I'll have to visit Grandma tomorrow, which means it will have taken me three days to accomplish the three very simple goals that I set on Wednesday. I know it's the fault of my poor time-management skills and messed-up sleeping schedule USA for constantly showing NCIS reruns that I can't tear myself away from! I recently found out that Josh, one of my co-workers, has the same debilitating condition of inability to do anything when NCIS is on. A new episode came on last Tuesday at seven, and when I told him that I didn't get off till seven, he offered to call me and hold his phone to the TV so I could hear what I was missing.

The newest song on my iPod (or at least the newest one that I'll admit to*) is a Spanish-language song called "De Que Vas." This is very unusual for me, because I've never been interested in non-French foreign anything. I found translated lyrics, so I have a rough idea of what's being sung, but I don't really care about the lyrics, just the hella catchy melody.

* Just kidding. I'm not ashamed of my taste in music. Other recent additions to my iPod include I'm Still Standing, Elton John; I Would Die for You, Prince; Born in the USA, Bruce Springsteen; Fearless, Taylor Swift; and Children of the Revolution, U2.

I really love our new computer chair. I found it by the side of the road when I was out riding my bike on Saturday, and I brought it home in my flatbed and spent the evening cleaning it and fixing it up. It has a really wheels, armrests, a high back, and a nice, coushy seat. I really don't think anyone could tell from looking at it that I found it on the street.

I was looking through my old journal entries the other night and found this entry I made in France, and since I just resynced my iPod, I decided to do it again. A line from 20 songs, selected randomly, rearranged so they tell a story ... sort of.

Some of these songs are embarrassing. )
rebecca_in_blue: (raised eyebrows)

Rebecca hasn't updated this in a good while. I kept meaning to, but I had to work a lot this week, and I'm working even more next week because two of my co-workers just quit or got fired. I don't which because I don't get involved in the drama, but the circumstances of their leaving were suspicious. I don't particularly have much to post about, anyway.

Sara and I watched the Oscars together on Sunday night. Entertainment Weekly seems to always complain about how they're too long and boring and the declining viewership is crippling the film industry, but I always enjoy them. One of the best parts this year was Philippe Petit, who accepted for Man on Wire by making a coin disappear and thanking the Academy for "believing in magic," then balancing his Oscar statue on his face. Only the French! And I couldn't stop laughing at Sophia Loren -- or rather, Sophia Loren's re-animated corpse, who helped to present Best Actress with one bizarre pose and one freaky facial expression. There were also two young actresses at the ceremony this year, and though I'm not a fan of one of them (Miley Cyrus) and know nothing about the other one (Rubina Ali), they both went straight into my album of Young Actresses at the Oscars.

Is it wrong that most of my employee-of-the-month bonus went right back to my own store? On Thursday I used a good part of it to buy some anti-virus software and other stuff, and that night I stayed up too late downloading the anti-virus software, then LimeWire, then iTunes. And then, finally, I updated my iPod! I haven't been able to do this in months! I had to erase all my 100+ songs and completely resync it to a new library (it had been synced with my old library on Mom's computer), but I was so happy to get some new music on it that I didn't care. Today I went for a nice long bike ride and listened to it and felt great. I was able to collect a lot of cans that had been left on the ground from Mardi Gras.

I had two very weird exchanges with customers at work Friday morning. First I met the current French teacher at my old elementary school, and we had a conversation in French, which was cool. (Even though I used tu instead of vous! At least she was American, so she probably wasn't offended.) Then I met a guy who works with my older brother and described him as, and I quote, "probably my best friend." I just stared at him. Freaky.

B...
You -- you said B.
B...
You said B! Good!
B... good...

So Sara did this thing on her journal where you blog about songs on your iPod starting with the same letter. She told me to do it with B. Maybe it's a hard letter, or maybe I'm a boring person, but I can't think of many interesting things to say about the B songs on my iPod.

Babylon, David Grey. I first heard this song during my junior year of high school, and I included it on a cassette tape that I recorded from the radio that year. To this day most of the songs on that tape, including Peaceful World and Pacific Coast Party (which I also have on my iPod), still remind me of junior year -- creative writing with Mr. Womac, French with Mlle Gryppe, English with Coach Jeff. I recently compiled all the songs on that tape into a YouTube playlist titled Junior Year Music.

Bette Davis Eyes, Kim Carnes. I'm not sure when I first heard this song, but I remember that I was sitting in the truck in the Kroger's parking lot, and I loved it immediately, even though I couldn't understand all of it. I originally thought the line was "better days besides," instead of "Bette Davis eyes." Also I didn't really know who Bette Davis was. This and Bob Seger's "Night Moves" are two songs that I will always sing along with every time I hear them on the radio or on my iPod.

Better Days, The Goo Goo Dolls. This song came out, I believe, in January 2006 (it's about the start of a new year). The first time I remember hearing it was while I was driving back from the Factory Outlet with Mom. Later it came on while I was driving to Grandma's house, and I sat in the truck in her driveway to hear all of it. Grandma walked out to the truck to see why I was just sitting there.

Bad Day, Daniel Powter. I first heard this song in spring 2006, during my last days in tarpartment. I used to watch music videos on VH1 every morning while I ate my breakfast, and I still remember the video for this song. I've always really loved this song, but for some reason, I didn't think to add it to my iPod until recently.

Best Friends, Toy-Box. I recently made a YouTube video with this, and Sara is still talking about what a disturbing song she thinks it is. It is pretty weird and somewhat creepy, but it's also hella catchy. I first heard it in France in fall 2007, when a friend of mine on YouTube made a video of it with Dakota and Elle Fanning. The song was so damn catchy that I couldn't stop watching that video.

In the last 48 hours, Rebecca has....

  • Bought three goat cheese pizzas and eaten two. Also had Heather take pictures of me eating the pizza. (Yeah, we all know what I’m going to miss.)
  • Bought a chocolate bar, a bag of nougat (it's a little different from what we know as nougat in the US; it's little white cubes of dough with peanuts in it, and damn, is it delicious), and two île flottant desserts (these are basically meringue with English cream and caramel sauce – so good). I’m determined to stuff as many French desserts as I can into my body during my last few days.
  • Donated the English-language books that I can’t take back with me to the médiathèque.
  • Made three visits to the bank to arrange to have my money transferred into my American bank account. The third time I came in, I said, “Okay, this is the last time, really.” The woman who sat at the front desk all day said, “Oh, but we’ve missed you.”
The left side of my neck has been very stiff lately. I thought I might have slept on it at an odd angle, but there also seems to be something wrong with the left side of my jaw, which is sore, and my left ear, which feels funny, like I have a head cold or something. The teeth and gums on the bottom right side of my mouth are also sore, but I think this is from my last appointment to the dentist. It wasn’t really painful this time, but there was a lot of pressure on my mouth.

A list for future reference:

Yesterday night I made up a little game to play with my iPod. I set it on random order and wrote down the first 25 songs that played. Then I listened to these songs and wrote down my favorite lyric from each one. Then I tried to rearrange these lyrics so that they told a story. Remember, Rebecca has very few English books to read and the only English channel she gets is CNN International, so she has to keep herself entertained somehow.

Anyway, the list below is the end result. You probably won't be able to see a story, but if you know the title of the song that any of these lyrics come from, let me know in comments. I think that Sara and Adam might know all 25 between them.

I will be mailing a few souvenirs of my trip to Belgium home tomorrow.

rebecca_in_blue: (dozing off)

At Sara’s insistence, I gave my iPod a name, Holly Boulon (don’t ask why – it’s a joke that only Sara and I get). Although I’ve also given names to my truck (Sharon Pearl) and my bike (Clochette), I usually disapprove of naming inanimate objects because I feel it promotes the materialism of our society.

A few days ago, I came across an iPod quiz. You set your iPod to play songs in random order and click to a new song for the answer to each question.
