What Holly Boulon says about me...

At Sara’s insistence, I gave my iPod a name, Holly Boulon (don’t ask why – it’s a joke that only Sara and I get). Although I’ve also given names to my truck (Sharon Pearl) and my bike (Clochette), I usually disapprove of naming inanimate objects because I feel it promotes the materialism of our society.
A few days ago, I came across an iPod quiz. You set your iPod to play songs in random order and click to a new song for the answer to each question.
1. How am I feeling today? Rich Girl, Hall & Oates. I’m feeling rich? Far from it.
2. Where will I be in a week? I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues, Elton John. This is a little ominous. Am I going to be dead in a week?
3. What is the best thing about me? Bette Davis Eyes, Kim Carnes. This one is so far from true that it’s funny. My eyes aren’t anything like Bette Davis’s, and even if they were, I would hate for a physical trait to be the best thing about me.
4. How does the world see me? Suddenly I See, KT Tunstall. This one is interesting. Sample lyrics: “You can see she’s a beautiful girl, she’s a beautiful girl / And everything around her is a silver pool of light.” But I can’t imagine anyone would ever feel this way about me.
5. What do my friends really think of me? Waiting for a Star to Fall, Boy Meets Girl. This one is also very funny. My friends are secretly in love with me?
6. Will I have a happy life? Better Days, The Goo-Goo Dolls. My life will be filled with better days!
7. What should I do with my life? White & Nerdy, Weird Al Yankovic. This one hits the nail right on the head. I’m already white and nerdy, and I’m going to be for the rest of my life.
8. What should I do with my love life? Get on Board, Shirley Temple. This one is also completely apt, but in a rather embarrassing way. I knew my love life, or lack thereof, is pathetic, but not so much that I needed Shirley Temple to tell me to get with it.
9. How will my career go? You’ve Been a Friend to Me, LQ Jones. I love this song, but I’m not sure it makes sense with this question. My career is going to be my friend?
10. How will the rest of my life go? Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, The Police. The rest of my life is going to be magical!
11. How can I make myself happy? Impossible, It’s Possible, Julie Andrews. This one is almost inspiring. If I want to find happiness, I should reach for the impossible. Thank you, Julie Andrews.
12. What is some good advice for me? What Would Brian Boitano Do, from South Park. This is hilarious. Apparently I should thinking about what Brian Boitano would do every time I have to make a decision.
13. Do people secretly lust after me? Don’t Stand So Close to Me, The Police. Wow, this is actually a song about a student secretly lusting after her teacher. But I’m sure I’ve never lusted after any of my old bald professors, and I’m pretty damn sure they’ve never lusted after me.
14. Will I ever get married? Fast Car, Tracey Chapman. So, I am going to get married, but we’ll live in a shelter and my husband will stay out drinking while I’m working in a supermarket? I don’t think so.
15. Will I ever have children? A Charmed Life, Leigh Nash. This is a song from a Dakota Fanning movie with lyrics like, “It’s a charmed life, innocence wild / Crayola skies for a thousand miles” – I’ll take that as a yes.
16. What song will be played at my wedding reception? Red River Valley, Garrison Keillor & Jearlyn Steele. This song is beautiful but also very sad. I’m not sure I would it played at my wedding reception.
17. What song will be played at my funeral? La Complainte de la Butte, Rufus Wainwright. I’m going to die from syphilis while working as a starving prostitute in Paris?
18. Will I die happy? Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, Wham. This song is so upbeat and infectious that I’ll take it as a yes. I’m going to die very happy and wake someone up before I do it.
19. How will I be remembered? Defying Gravity, from Wicked. This one is great. I absolutely love Defying Gravity; it’s almost like my personal theme song.
20. Why should the world be full of so much pain? The Middle, Jimmy Eat World. Well, this one makes a little sense, and anyway, it’s a pretty optimistic song. Sample lyrics: “Hey, don’t write yourself off yet / It’s only in your head you feel left out, or looked down on / Just do your best, do everything you can.”
21. What is happiness? Downtown Train, Rod Stewart. This is another one that just doesn’t make sense. I’m not sure happiness is riding on a train with Rod Stewart.
22. What is my fetish? Spirit in the Sky, Creedence Clearwater Revival. Does this mean that my fetish supposed to be Jesus? No wonder Shirley Temple has a better love life than me.
23. What do I like to say about everything? Speed of Sound, Coldplay. I’m not even sure what this question is supposed to mean. I’ve always really loved this song’s lyric, “If you could see it, then you’d understand.” Maybe that’s what I like to say about everything.
24. Where am I going in life? These Days, Chantal Kreviazuk. This song is basically about getting through tough times with the support of friends (Sample lyrics: “I’ll lend you my tears if I could borrow your smile / And we’ll get through tomorrow some other day / Happy after, once upon these days”), which is pretty nice.
25. What is the story of my life? Slow Days of Summer, Garrison Keillor. This song is mellow in the extreme, and I love it. Sample lyrics: “Sun goes across the sky / Sometimes a car goes by / There’s one right now / Looks like a Chevy.” It’s nice to think that my life could be as soothing and mellow as this song.
