Today, November 23, 2011, is the fifteen-year anniversary of the day my family adopted Sable. Fifteen years! That's more than half my life. I really can't believe it. If you had told me even last year that Sable would still be alive to see this day, I probably wouldn't have believed you. Don't me wrong, I'm not complaining. I ♥ ♥ my puppy, and I'm happy that he's still with us, but he's been slowing down a lot lately, and I find myself wondering how much time we have left with him.

This is the oldest photo I have of me and Sable together. He's only about five months old in it. It was taken by Grandma on Sara's birthday in December 1996, just a few weeks after we first got him. Look at how tiny Sable is, and how young we both are! It's unbelievable!

(P.S. Making this post has made me feel really old.)

I know most of these pictures came out badly. Don't ask me why.

"That's right, officer, she was riding her bike down the middle of the street while taking pictures of her uncle, who was also riding a bike down the middle of the street. They just never saw that oncoming SUV."

The view of the creek from the bridge. Yes, there are other names for it (like drainage canal, ditch, and gutter) but I call it a creek because this stretch of it really was quite picturesque.

The view from the bank. There was almost no litter at all!

Eva on a little island in a wide part of the creek. She posed for one picture for me...

... and spent the rest of her time running up and down the banks. There was no stopping her!

Meanwhile, Rebecca reverted back to age 6 and pretended she was in the Hundred Acre Wood playing Pooh Sticks.

Eva trying to find a way across the water.

She did not fall, even though those rocks were very slippery. It makes me think of Maria stepping across the stream in the opening of The Sound of Music.

That huge silver thing around my neck is my dogtag and my Star of David pendant. My Star of David is very big, and the six points are razor-sharp!

Mardi Gras isn't a holiday that Sara and I are big fans of. We both work on the parade route, so we have problems with traffic and unruly parade-goers wanting to use the restrooms. Fortunately we were both off for Fat Tuesday yesterday, so we skipped the insanity, stayed inside, and ordered pizza. It literally rained on the parade here, but I could still hear it from our apartment.

This was our Mardi Gras weather:

Raindrops keep fallin' on my head
But that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turnin' red
Cryin's not for me, no
I'm never gonna stop the rain by complainin'

These photos were taken within a week of each other, right outside my door. I like seeing the seasons change, but geez, it's supposed to take a little while to get from one to the next. Could the weather down here by any crazier? I think not.

You can't really tell, but those are frozen raindrops on the grass in this one. It was so cold!

This one was taken yesterday. The first little white flowers of spring! And notice how the grass is in focus (although perhaps too sharp, because I had to shrink the photo) while the background is blurry? I'm in geek heaven over this!

When the night has been too lonely
And the road has been too long
And you think that love is only
For the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winter
Far beneath the bitter snows
Lies the seed that with the sun's love
In the spring, becomes the rose

Wow, Rebecca got her haircut today for the first time in nearly three years! (I am not kidding.) I've never really liked getting my haircut, and the last one I had was especially traumatic, which is why I avoided it for so long. But my hair had gotten so messy and ragged-looking, I was glad to see it go. My hairdresser cut off almost ten inches and added it to some hair she was mailing to Locks of Love. I had really wanted to send it to help soak up the gulf oil spill, but I did some research and apparently they're not collecting hair for that anymore.

My new haircut is so different! It's a bit shorter than I had planned, but I'm proud of myself for trying something new. 2011 has already been a good year for new things. Now if Rebecca could just find a new job. I'm kinda dreading going back to work tomorrow with my new haircut, even though I like it and I know the people I work with will have nice things to say. But it's always weird right after changing something about your appearence.

The last few days have been so cold! This monumentally bad news here in Louisiana, where we can deal with hurricanes but not with freezing temperatures (which is what we're supposed to get tonight). I have felt so out-of-it lately, my sore throat is coming and going, I'm behind in my Torah readings, and I blame it all on this weather. If spring wants to make an early appearence, it's just fine with me, and Sable, and Graycat.

One year ago today:

Sara and I wrote our initials in some wet cement across the street. For some reason, I got the date wrong and put 1-2 instead of 1-12.

And because I knew you wouldn't believe it unless you saw it for yourself:

I know it's not the best picture; it was taken in haste in front of the window on our stairwell (I was experimenting with different backgrounds).

I love these two photos so much. I'm so happy that I was able to get them both, even though I wish they were more uniform. These trees are just a few blocks away, and I ride my bike past them regularly.

It's not easy to find the four seasons here in Louisiana, but you can if you look.

I took this one on a bike ride last March. The trees were in full-bloom (they're Bradford Pear Trees, I think?) and so beautiful that I almost crashed my bike staring at them. Very "White Way of Delight," even if it is a little blurry.

I took this one on Christmas Eve. We never get fall foliage down here, so I was super excited when I saw this (and almost crashed my bike again). There's a little sunflare in this one because it was so bright that day.

My grandma is twice as awesome as normal grandmas. Ergo, her lemons are twice as big, delicious, and juicy as normal lemons. Photographic proof had to be secured.

I took this yesterday in her garden.

This is what my mom's dining room table looked like on Thanksgiving Day. It's like a picture from a magazine, isn't it? My grandma doesn't decorate at all for Thanksgiving, but her dinner was much tastier than Mom's. Which isn't to say that Mom's wasn't good, since Grandma is a better cook than pretty much anyone in the world.

I think Mom's dining room photographs much better than it looks in real life.

A jack-o-lantern pumpkin carved by our downstairs neighbors. It's supposed to be throwing up (took me a minute to figure that out). Gross, but creative.

I promise you all that this cake tasted every bit as good as it looked. It was a double-layered devil's food with vanilla frosting dyed green decorated with M&M's, and I made the whole thing myself. By now, of couse, it's all gone, but at least I was able to get these pictures before everyone dug in.

On Grandma's dining room table. Isn't it lovely?

The cake close-up.

Mom got me an end table that I'd been wanting forever. (Sara asked when I was setting it up, "Is it everything you dreamed it would be?") Athena and Josh sent me "Happy Birthday!" text messages, and Josh offered to find me a nude picture of Sean Murray. Haha. I told him I'd prefer one of Cote de Pablo. Sara gave me a pin that says "I Love Ducky" and an NCIS t-shirt that I'm wearing right now. It's awesome!

Taken a few hours ago, on a walk down the block. The sun was just starting to set behind the live oak tree, and the shot was perfect, but I ruined it by taking the picture in a hurry. I wanted to get it before that patchy old dog wandered out of the frame. I edited it to look a little more blurry, so maybe it would seem like it's supposed to be that way.

The evening was so cool. I wanted to go bike riding, but I've been exhausted all day. Staying up until 3 am to post in NCIS LiveJournal communities and message boards and rewatch the premiere the CBS website was not a good idea.

Taken a few hours ago, looking out the living room window with the best view:

SIX ... DAYS ... LEFT until NCIS Season 8!
