It took me forever to figure out whether the new NCIS episode was airing today or next week. And it was posted online later than usual, which only added to my confusion. But I finally saw it after I got off work tonight, and I'm so glad I did! There were a few flaws, but for the most part, this was a really good episode.
Notes on episode 9x10 Sins of the Father
(AKA #3 with DiNozzo Sr., last seen in Broken Arrow)
Writers: George Schenck & Frank Cardea (Enemy on the Hill)
- Did they really have to avoid showing us Sr.'s face until the end of the opening scene? We all knew from the spoilers and promos that it was him, and some of the camera angles they used to work around his face were ridiculous.
- So, Tony's dad is found in incriminating circumstances with no memory of how he got there. You know, this has happened to characters before, writers! It happened to Tony himself just recently in Nature of the Beast, and to McGee's sister back in Twisted Sister. For other plotlines that have been recently (shamelessly) rehashed, see Thirst and Penelope's Papers.
+ Interesting, the first bullpen scene was quite similar to the one in Broken Arrow. In both, Ziva arrived excited about something (in Broken Arrow, her new American passport; in this one, the crisp fall weather) and then Tony arrived upset/angry over something else and squashed her good mood. I think Schenck and Cardea did this on purpose.
- Gibbs shoving Tony behind the tape and calling Sr. "the suspect" were pretty harsh. Yes, Tony has a clear conflict of interest and needed to be removed from the case, but Gibbs could've been nicer about it.
- Did Tony being removed from his dad's case seem weird to you? Well, it should! So far on this show, we've had (in order) McGee investigating his sister's case in Twisted Sister, Gibbs leading the investigation on his former mother-in-law (who did commit murder, and Gibbs let her get away with it) in Mother's Day, and Ziva working protection detail for her estranged father in Enemies Foreign. But oh no, we better not let Tony investigate his dad's case!
+ Sr.'s West Side Story reference as he was being handcuffed. Heh, he's just like his son!
- "The suspect is related to an agent. You." Yeah, duh, Gibbs! And why did he say this like it was Tony's fault? Hmph.
+ Gibbs interrogating Tony's dad reminded me a lot of him interrogating McGee's grandma in Penelope's Papers.
+ The scene with Tony trying to bribe, then blackmail his way into interrogation to see his dad totally cracked me up. I also loved his scene with Sr. They have a great dynamic.
+/- Sr: "Junior, when are you gonna come to your senses and sweep this gorgeous creature off her feet?" Holy crap. He ships Tiva. I'm not sure how I feel about this.
+ Abby seemed so sad as the evidence kept piling up against Sr. It was kinda touching.
+ Tony trying to get information out of McGee in the break room. This is a good example of the good Tony/McGee interaction that Schenck & Cardea usually deliver. McGee's "very special agent" line to Tony was so bromantic.
+ "Good Godfrey! This joint is out of Dickens!" I lol'ed at that line.
+ Damn, Sr. spent the night at Gibbs's house! (Didn't you love the horrified look on Tony's face when Gibbs told him that?) This has to be more awkward than when Gibbs had both Jackson and Mike staying with back in The Spider and the Fly. His "Tony wants a dad" line was so cheesy. That's what Tony has Gibbs for!
+ Yay, Tony went down to Abby's lab! It's been way too long since Abby had a friendship scene with him or Ziva. It was short, but I loved it when she hugged him. Awww!
+ I went into this episode with some trepidation. Tony did a lot of awkward squirming in Flesh and Blood and Broken Arrow, the last two episodes with his dad, and I was worried that this would be more of the same. But he was treated a lot better in this one and got to showcase his great detective skills. He wasn't even officially working on his dad's case, and yet he managed to solve it before Gibbs, McGee, and Ziva, who were. Way to go, Tony!
