Rebecca won't be able to wash this taste out until next season.
There aren't enough words to describe how much I hated tonight's new NCIS episode. Seriously, I could barely even stomach writing my review for it. You might want to just skip this one altogether.
Notes on episode 8x14 A Man Walks Into a Bar
First appearance of Dr. Rachel Cranston
Writer: Gary Glasberg (Recruited)
- Ugh, Dr. Cranston rubbed me the wrong way from the get-go. In retrospect, I should've figured why sooner. The actress also seemed really bad to me. Did you know that she played the little red-haired nun in Sister Act and that her singing in that movie was dubbed? So she can't sing or act.
+/- Tony and Ziva's conversation about his visit to the horse track was kinda cute... until Glasberg decided to make Tony look stupid again by having him do horse whinnies. Ugh.
+ Ducky saying "in search of a tasty treat" as he approached Raymond's body. It was so weird, I had to laugh.
- "A bad report can lead to change, Gibbs." Oh, please, Vance, you know this show subscribes to Status Quo Is God.
+ "We are who we are." I loved that Gibbs defended his team. He can be very protective with them.
- Tony getting so short with the Korean journalist. I think he's stressed because of that damn doctor.
- Dr. Cranston's session with Ziva. Let me count the ways I hated it. I rolled my eyes at Cranston assuming that Ziva had a hard time filling Kate's shoes. Oh, as if. We all know the show's ratings skyrocketed when Ziva replaced Kate, fans overwhelmingly prefer her, and Ziva's confidence and skill (especially in the early seasons) kept her from having a hard time. Ziva has been on the show so much longer and brought so much more to it, there's really no comparison between them. What made me sick was how Cranston really seemed to enjoy pushing Ziva and making her uncomfortable, as if it was her fault Kate died. What a bitch, just like her sister.
+ Abby being sarcastic to Cranston in her lab, and Tony leaving autopsy when she entered. Pure, childish satisfaction here.
- Ugh, it's a clip show. Even worse, a Kate-themed one. I was tempted to turn it off. And I had such high hopes for this one! Damn you, Glasberg.
+/- Cranston's session with McGee. I hated her assuming that he must love being in the field without Tony (and so did the Tony/McGee shippers!), but I did like her complimenting him on how much he's grown since he joined the team -- because he really has.
- The old clip of Tony and Kate double head-smacking McGee. See, this was one thing I hated about her: whenever Tony picked on McGee, Kate always joined right in, whereas Ziva always sticks up for him.
- Cranston barging into the suspect's house after McGee told her to wait outside. Ugh, this woman. What is she trying to do, get them both killed?
+/- Tony and Cranston in the break room. He gets all up in her face (which felt really good) and she responds by quoting poetry? What a horrible shrink. The old clip of Director Shepherd offering him the Rota position and him turning it down was interesting, though.
- Ugh, Cranston is a McAbby shipper. It felt so forced. I hate you, Glasberg.
- Even worse, wasting so much time on Cranston and all the old clips took way too much time on the case. It felt so sidelined and half-done. Could anyone really follow it?
- "Do you know what I've had to sacrifice for this job, for the Navy?" No, of course we don't, Vance. You know the writers only hint at your backstory.
- The case story felt unfinished, but it was interesting that Reynolds killed himself because he was facing mandatory retirement, especially after Cranston had been talking about Gibbs's team and how devoted they are to their jobs.
- Ugh, now Glasberg is trying to ret-con Kate completely by having Cranston insist that she was "hard on" Tony because she knew he was capable of more, and trying to make old clips of them look more meaningful than they ever really were. Let's get one thing straight: Kate was never "hard on" Tony; she was a mean bitch who constantly put him down for no real reason. Yes, Ziva puts him down sometimes, too, but she also says nice things about him. (It depends on who the writer is. Their interaction, unfortunately, can be pretty up-and-down.)
- "Glad you reached out." You're glad, Gibbs? Glad that she psych-evaled your team, pushed them and made them uncomfortable, disobeyed direct orders in the field, and got access to their authorized-only personal files, all when she wasn't even doing her job, but instead serving her own emotional needs? How unprofessional. If she wanted to meet the team Kate had worked with, why didn't she just do it openly, instead of in this sneaky, backhanded, disgustingly dishonest way? It irked me so much that Vance let her do this.
Well, at least now it's over and I can pretend it never aired. And immediately start lowering my hopes whenever I see Glasberg listed as an episode writer.
